My husband and I, we’ve moved… a lot. We have moved [houses, not always locations] just about every 2 years since we got married…and no, we’re not in the military, lol. Approximately every other year we get to clean out our stuff. As in, toss out a lot of unnecessary junk. We’ve been in our current house for almost 4 years…and let me just say, our “stuff” is piling up! And it’s bothering me…I truly love getting to clean out all the things, and since it’s been double the amount of time as normal, I have double the amount of “stuff” that needs pitched! To say I am feeling the itch to sort, throw out and have a yard sale… is a bit of an understatement!
And so it’s begun, I’ve been…cleaning things out. My garage has a huge pile of junk in it and random other piles are left in my wake throughout the house. While purging our things, the Lord brought this to my heart: We need to do the very same thing with our spiritual lives. Take inventory…see what’s good in our life, what’s drawing us closer to the Lord and what’s not…keep what’s good and purge what’s not!
Because…there are so many things in our life that can take our attention away from the Lord. Things that focus our time and energy away from the things of God…all of them vying for our attention…and our hearts.
The Bible has something to say about just that. In order for us to grow spiritually, sometimes we need to take a spiritual inventory…getting rid of some of the things that are toxic or worthless in our life, and putting things of Christ in their rightful place. See here what the writer of Hebrews has to say:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” Hebrews 12:1-2
“Strip off every weight that slows us down…” “especially sin…” Taking spiritual inventory in our life can be hard…whether it’s sin or it’s a weight that slows us down. Ask the Lord what’s in your life that needs to go! Because sin, it can trip us up…make us go down a road we never intended to, take us further away from God’s heart.
As we do it, remembering to keep our eyes on Jesus…He’s the one who perfects our faith. He’s the one who walked this earth and kept His focus perfect the whole time. He knows…and He’s conquered. He has the victory!
Let me encourage you…just like our family tends to “purge” our things every couple of years, we need to do the very same thing with our spiritual life. Get rid of the things that “slow us down”, things that trip us up, things that draw us away from Christ…and let us not just RUN, but RUN WITH ENDURANCE, toward Jesus!
Psalm 119:37 “Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word!”
