Not too long ago, I was in the pediatric dentist office with my two oldest kiddos, waiting for their appointment for a yearly cleaning. The office had gaming stations, a huge TV with the Disney channel on and a large fish tank. Lots and lots of things to keep just about any age kiddo entertained for a time. And on top of all of that..was the radio.
You could hear it over everything else and it was set on a station that must’ve been “oldies”…or really what my generation listened to when we were in high school, lol. [When did “we” become “old”?!] A song came on I not only recognized but remembered every single word of. You might recognize it too…
“I’ll make love to you…like you want me to…and I’ll hold you tight…baby all through the night, I’ll make love to you…” Ahem. [Insert red cheeks here!]
I sat there, looking at all of the things vying for my kids attention…and above it all was an old song that didn’t make me smile. Honestly, I was secretly praying my kids didn’t hear it. I could hear the questions coming…”Momma, what does it mean ‘I’ll make love to you?'” Not yet!!!! I mean, I do know sooner or later that little talk WILL happen, but at the ages of 6 and 8…no thank you. It made me really think about my kids AND their hearts.
Proverbs 4:3 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” [emphasis mine.]
My husband and I, we are active in protecting our kiddos hearts. Actually, we take it pretty seriously. Out there in the world are a lot of things trying to get their attention and get into their hearts…just like in the dentist office that day. And when they’re young, it’s our job to help them protect their hearts.
What your kids put in their heart…it matters. More than you know. It influences their future and present decisions and it influences what they believe/feel. I’m not just talking music here either… there are movies and tv or what your kids look at/read.
Take it from me…I remember what influence that particular song had on me back in the day. And let’s be honest, I wasn’t married then. So it brought nothing good to my teenage thoughts and feelings.
Above everything else….
Guard. Your. Heart. Like a soldier guarding the most precious thing on earth.
You know why?
EVERYTHING you do comes from that heart of yours. And it’s PRECIOUS…your heart. Everything you do…comes from it.
I think God said it best when He says what to fill our hearts with:
“…Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” [Philippians 4:8]
If you are a parent, I believe it’s an honor to get to help guard your child’s heart. It may mean watching a movie before they do or getting software loaded on your tablets that will block certain things or knowing what’s on their iPod/phone, knowing their friends or taking the time to explain what something in a song means according to scripture…but, I truly believe it’s a mandate that isn’t to be taken lightly. There is a very real battle going on for the hearts of our children…and the great part is…you get to fill your child’s heart with things of Christ!
